Where to Stay in Copenhagen

Location beats hotel star rating. Stay near metro, within 2 km of city centre, or on metro line connecting to city (Nørreport, Kongens Nytorv, Vesterbro, Nørrebro). Indre By (historic centre) most central; Vesterbro and Nørrebro more local. Avoid Amager unless beach-focused.

Picking a neighbourhood

Indre By (city centre)

Most central (Nyhavn, Strøget, Amalienborg, Christiansborg all within 5–10 min walk). Tourist-heavy, pricey hotels (€120–200/night), noisy. Good for: quick visits, easy metro access, walkable to everything. Avoid: if you want local vibes or peace.

Nørreport / Kongens Nytorv

East side of Strøget, metro hub. 2–5 min walk to cafés, design shops, Torvehallerne market. Less touristy than west Indre By. Good for: market access, food scene, metro connection to Nørrebro/Vesterbro. €100–150/night range.

Vesterbro

West of Central Station, meatpacking district (Kødbyen) = trendy restaurants, bars, galleries. Colourful street art, vintage shops. More local than Indre By. 10–15 min walk to Strøget; metro connection strong (M1, M2). Good for: night life, food, local vibe. €90–140/night.

Nørrebro

Northwest, across the lakes from city centre. Densely residential, Danish neighbourhood feel. Hip street (Jægersborggade): design shops, bakeries, casual restaurants. 15–20 min by metro to the centre (M2). Assistents Cemetery free park. Good for: local life, affordable, food, design. €80–130/night.

Christianshavn

South across Inderhavnsbroen bridge or metro (M1, M2 to Christianshavn). Canals, Freetown Christiania nearby, quieter. Islands Brygge harbour at end. More local. 10 min metro to centre. Good for: Christiania access, quieter pace, neighbourhoods. €90–140/night.

Amager

South across Amager Bridge or metro (M2). Beach-focused (Amager Strandpark, artificial lagoon, summer-only appeal). Residential, far from attractions (20+ min metro). Skip unless beach is priority. €70–110/night.

Frederiksberg

West, independent municipality entirely surrounded by Copenhagen. Wide avenues, formal gardens, affluent vibe. 20 min metro to centre. Not recommended for tourists; feels disconnected. €90–140/night.

Hotel options by budget

Budget (€50–90/night): Hostels with private rooms, Airbnb micro-apartments. Shared facilities; near metro. Usually in Nørrebro or Vesterbro.

How to choose

Usually included

  • First-time, 2–3 days: Nørreport or west Indre By. Walking distance to main sights. Hotel with location > luxury. Metro access is the deciding factor.
  • Repeat visitor, want local vibes: Vesterbro or Nørrebro. Restaurant/bar scene, walk to city centre in 15–20 min. Feels less touristy.
  • Longer stay (4+ days): Airbnb apartment in Nørrebro or Vesterbro. Kitchen, washing machine, local neighbourhood immersion. Cheaper than hotels.
  • Beach-focused (summer only): Amager Strandpark area. Otherwise not worth the travel time.

Practical tips

Usually included

  • Metro is key. Pick a neighbourhood with metro access (nearly all do). Walking everywhere is free, but metro is faster in rain.
  • Bike rentals from your hotel. Saves daily rental cost (DKK 100–150). Many hotels offer package deals.
  • Airbnb cheaper than hotels. Apartment with kitchen saves money on breakfast/lunch. Laundry machine is luxury on longer stays.
  • Book 2–3 months ahead (peak June–August). Hotels fill quickly.
  • Weekend rates higher than weekday. Midweek (Mon–Thu) often 20% cheaper.
  • VAT included in quoted price. What you see is what you pay (unlike US pricing).
Insider tip

Location beats star rating. Stay near metro, within 2 km of city centre, or connected by metro line. Vesterbro or Nørrebro are the sweet spot: local vibes, good restaurants, 15 min by metro to everything. Indre By is central but touristy; pick it only if you have limited time.
