Is Copenhagen Safe?

Very safe by big-city standards. Low violent crime, excellent police presence, well-lit streets, responsive emergency services. The real hazard: bike lanes (cyclists move fast, don’t walk in bike lanes). Normal pickpocketing at Nyhavn/Strøget crowds. Christiania etiquette is the only no-go.

Safety by the numbers

Copenhagen consistently ranks in Europe’s safest cities (top 5 for major capitals). Violent crime is rare. Police response is fast. Street lighting is excellent. Locals walk at midnight without fear.

Real hazards (petty, not violent)

Bike lanes (the actual danger)

Cyclists move fast (~25 km/h), signal with hands, assume pedestrians obey lanes. Never walk in a bike lane. If you do, you will be shouted at or hit. Bike lanes are kerb-separated (physical barrier); stay OUT of them. This is not a safety issue; it’s a traffic rule you must obey.

Pickpocketing (petty, concentrated areas)

Where it happens: Nyhavn at busy times, Strøget during shopping hours, crowded metro during rush hour, major tourist attractions.

Prevention: Keep valuables in a front pocket or secure bag. Don’t flash expensive cameras or phones. Use a small backpack in crowded spaces (easier to monitor than a purse on your shoulder).

If it happens: Report to police (Politiet). Call 112 for emergencies; 114 for non-urgent police. English-speaking officers available.

Intoxicated people (rare, concentrated areas)

Bar districts (Nyhavn, Strøget west, Vesterbro) get rowdy on weekend nights. Avoid picking fights or confrontations. These areas are not dangerous for tourists; just noisier. Move to quieter areas if uncomfortable.

Freetown Christiania etiquette

Freetown is safe to visit as a tourist but has unwritten rules:

Usually included

  • Photography: Do NOT photograph on Pusher Street (the main drag) or in any clearly marked no-photo zones. Residents will confront you. Respect this rule strictly.
  • Drug trade: Pusher Street was notorious for hash sales; the street was dug up and rebuilt in 2024. Current status is "still a market street, but reformed." Don’t buy anything. Don’t linger staring.
  • Behaviour: Be respectful, walk at normal pace, don’t gawk. Residents live there; it’s not a tourist attraction (though tourists visit).
  • Safety: Violent crime is extremely rare. Petty theft is possible but uncommon if you follow the etiquette above.

Emergency contacts

Usually included

  • Emergency (police, fire, ambulance): 112
  • Non-emergency police: 114
  • All numbers have English-speaking dispatchers.

Practical safety tips

Usually included

  • Stay out of bike lanes. This is the real hazard. Cyclists are fast and unforgiving.
  • Use common sense in crowded areas. Nyhavn, Strøget, metro rush hour: watch your valuables.
  • Avoid Nyhavn very late (past midnight) if alone. It’s usually fine, but it can get rowdy on weekends.
  • Streets are well-lit and busy until 23:00. Walking at night is normal.
  • Taxis/metro available 24/7. If uncomfortable, take transport instead of walking late.
  • Respect Christiania no-photo rules. Otherwise, it’s safe to visit.
Insider tip

Copenhagen is very safe. The bike lane hazard is real (don’t walk in them). Pickpocketing is petty and concentrated. Christiania is safe if you respect the no-photo rule. You can walk alone at night; locals do. Use normal big-city sense and you’ll be fine.
